Cliche Bingo fanart, plus fic & vid recs
avengers-natasha

Finally! I can cross one square off last year's Cliché Bingo card. I picked 'vulnerability'... which gave me the excuse inspiration to draw this scene.

After the battle (Roy&Riza). Just speculation for the end of the manga.

(and I inked the one I posted the sketch of the other day. It's not yet colored though. And it needs at least a hint of background.)

fic recs:
Firefight by genarti (FMA)
gen; PG-13; Havoc, Mustang, Hawkeye; 1597 words
Summary: Well, what the hell, thinks Havoc. Nobody ever claimed working for the Flame Alchemist was boring.

Seriously cool snapshot of Mustang's team, doing what they do best. The voices are spot on!
The colonel's standing two yards closer -- well, he would, and it's not as if he's got anything to worry about -- and his coattails keep billowing. It's a very dramatic silhouette, and Jean is privately sure that's the entire reason the bastard colonel wears his coat so often. Hell, he probably maneuvers the air or something to make it billow more.
Heteronormativity, Gender Construction, and Non-Verbal Signalling in Intercultural Communication Situations (A Comedy) by mad_maudlin (SGA)
Pairing: John/Teyla, various others; PG-13; Mensa AU; ~35,000
Summary: In which Teyla may be plotting something, Keller may be delusional, Ronon may be cheating and John may in fact be the girl.

This was fantastic and funny and cracky and really refreshing.

speaking of stuff wot cracked me up: Total Eclipse of the Heart: Literal Video Version
It started out as Hogwarts, now it's Lord of the Flies.

There was another literal video I wanted to link, alas, Youtube was faster; it's already gone. Those Youtube folks need to read up on parody and fair use. This is ridiculous.

more crack: everybody loves roy! by morningeee (FMA)
Funny vid, though the cuts are a bit fast for my taste. I actually noticed that with most of the FMA vids I found interesting. Just a coincidence, or are vids in anime fandom cut faster than in Western media fandom? Like, a general stylistic trend?

Here's another one I really like, but which I'd enjoy even more if it would allow me a breather here and there to process the information.
All is fading by SerenKyun (FMA)
Song: Fading by Decyfer Down.
Really, darn fast... but it's so well-edited that it doesn't feel hectic. I love the music choice, too. Ensemble vid.

"Keller may be delusional"

I'm... worried about reading this one. I know it's you who's reccing it, but I still want to ask for clarification about treatment of her in this fic, since that part of the summary sets off a warning bell for me - I'm sure you'll understand why! :)

And I really like your drawings, as always! :D

I'm sure you'll understand why! :)

Do I ever. Yeah, I've come to be super-wary myself. But trust me. I could never rec a fic that doesn't respect her. Heck, I can't even finish reading fic that doesn't treat her right. She's adorable in this one, and the subplots with her and Ronon and Melana is one of my favorite parts.

I did think you were very unlikely to rec a fic which was bad for her, but I thought I'd check :) Thank you!

I did think you were very unlikely to rec a fic which was bad for her,

Talk about OOC... *g*

The first one reminds me of the end of Chrono Crusade, which made me tear up. Very nice drawings!

Thank you. :)

eta: btw, nice icon. Where's the art from, out of curiosity?

Edited at 2010-05-03 10:01 pm (UTC)

Unfortunately I don't know. I found it in icon form... I would love to see a bigger version of it though!

I would love to see a bigger version of it though!

You and me both. *g*

Beautiful work. I love the bullet holes added in the background of the first one...and just noticed her arm is around him :D

linking to this in a forum.

I'm glad you like it. And many thanks for the rec!

and just noticed her arm is around him :D

The moment called for it. :O)

these are absolutely gorgeous.

i love the art. you did a great job

Thank you. I have fun drawing those two. :)

Sketches are gorgeous as always, and cute besides!

AMVs do tend to cut faster and be higher octane than Western-based fanvids, yeah. (Actually, I was more into AMVs first, and it took me a little to adjust to the slower pace when I moved back into Western fandoms!) Some of this I think is due to the nature of the media (slow-moving animation is less interesting, as it's often static or nearly so.) Some of it is just style, though; as I understand it, AMVs mostly developed in a separate tradition from Western vidding tradition, with entirely different principles (AMVs were originally more the province of male fans with access to vid-editing tech, while fanvids were originally done by really determined female fans with VCRs) and while there's more overlap between the disciplines now, they are still different.

(Actually, I was more into AMVs first, and it took me a little to adjust to the slower pace when I moved back into Western fandoms!)

Yeah, I can see that. Actually I was rewatching a couple of these vids over and over yesterday and I was already adjusting to it a little, whereas the first time I was like, whoa, sensory overload!

Btw, what does AMV stand for, anime and manga vid?

(wtf lj? I keep trying to post this comment and it keeps not posting?)

AMV = Anime Music Video. It's a useful term to distinguish them from fanvids...

Huh, LJ being weird. The first one showed up in my inbox but not here.

Ooh, lovely art! I like the inks, and the Roy/Riza sketch ... yes, I'll take that ending, please. *g*

Regarding vidding - yes, there definitely are stylistic differences. I first got into vidding with AMVs, and found it a little hard to transition to the different aesthetic of fanvids; now it's a little weird for me to transition back.

Having vidded both, I think one of the reasons why AMVs tend to be cut faster is because anime is so full of static scenes - there are a LOT of scenes that are either a still frame, or a scene of characters talking or doing some activity in which nothing moves but their mouths or hands. In live action drama, there is always motion, and there's a great deal more camera motion as well (while anime has little camera movement except for horizontal pans or zooms). So in order to get the same sense of motion in anime, you have to do fast cuts because otherwise you end up with long clips of characters not moving.

I think one of the reasons why AMVs tend to be cut faster is because anime is so full of static scenes

Yeah, I'd been wondering if that might be one reason for it. In the episodes it's noticeable but not too distracting because the camera will move around or the detail that's in the focus moves. But the first few fma vids I checked out were cut at "normal" speed and they did seem a bit static. Could be that they were just not well-edited though. I mean, I don't think they'd need to be cut quite as fast as the ones I linked in order to work.

Once I found a vid I liked I favorite-hopped around and found several very cool ones. The style drew me in quickly. Some beautiful stuff out there.

The new sketch is gorgeous. I really love the little details like the shell casings on the floor and the bullet holes in the wall, and I may have squeed slightly when I realised where Hawkeye's arm was. They really do need a rest after all of this.

I've noticed the differences between AMVs and fanvids too- the use of lipsyncing in AMVs in particular took a bit of adjusting to. I'm interested to get into the practical differences on the creator's end if I ever get around to the FMA vids swimming around my brain.

and I may have squeed slightly when I realised where Hawkeye's arm was.

:) I didn't want it to be too obvious a PDA, more like something you notice on second glance. I figured those two have deserved a moment like that, after all the battling and mayhem.

I'm interested to get into the practical differences on the creator's end if I ever get around to the FMA vids swimming around my brain.

I also found an entirely manga-based vid I found interesting; probably going to link it with the next batch. More recently I've found myself wishing I could vid myself. It seems like such a fascinating medium.

These are lovely! I'm especially fond of the first one (one can only hope for that ending!), but I'm really impressed by the detail work on both.

Thank you, I'm thrilled you like it.

(one can only hope for that ending!)

Yes please!

Oh wow, I love both those sketches! That second one really inked up nicely, and I adore the posing of the first one. You capture a lot of emotion and exhaustion beautifully.

Also, now I want to rewatch that literal music video. Darn you! Have you seen the White Wedding one?

(And thank you so much for the rec!)

Have you seen the White Wedding one?

Heh. Good one.

I was amazed how some of these literal videos sound like the real thing. (And they remind me how I love 80s music, cracky vids notwithstanding...)

You capture a lot of emotion and exhaustion beautifully.

Glad you like it! Emotion and exhaustion was what I was going for.

I already started to color that one, but then I had to put it on the back-burner to get some real work done.

These are great! I especially like the one in pencil. Riza's arm around Roy just draws me into that one.

Riza's arm around Roy just draws me into that one.

Her hand just snuck there without my doing. Quite possibly the shippiest thing I've ever drawn. :)

Aw the first one is so sweet.
