Well, it took only four months, but my Black Widow comics are finally here. The comic store managed to misplace my order three times in a row. That German efficiency you may have heard of? Must be just a rumor. ;)

Anyway, now I have BW 1-4 and 6 and I've already read the first two. SO WORTH THE WAIT! I love Noto's artwork, too. Not as much as Aja's Hawkeye art, but Aja is one of my top-favorite artists and few come close.

Looking forward to #3 tonight. :)

As I understand it, comixology is giving away Hawkeye #1 in digital format for free today. So if you wanted to check out this awesome series, this would be a good opportunity.

And to stay on topic, a Hawkeye ficlet:

Summary: She couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen him without a mess of assorted bandages on his face. They didn’t call it getting into a scrape for nothing; Clint Barton was proof enough of that. Stop staring, Kate.

Summary: Darcy, Jane and Erik are staying on Asgard for reasons of security. Darcy is bored but her reputation precedes her.
“You should make the most of your time here,” says Frigga. “So few mortals have this opportunity.”
Darcy nods eagerly. Making the most of her opportunities. She can absolutely do that. “I’ll do my best,” she says.
Frigga smiles benignly and continues on her ethereal and badass way and Darcy lets out a breath. Before they left for Asgard, Clint Barton declared that Darcy Lewis was the person most likely to trigger a diplomatic incident, after Iron Man.

[personal profile] lakrids404 linked me to this very cool parkour vid In the style of the Mirror's Edge game. (Which I'm unfamiliar with, but watching this vid you get a good idea what the actual game looks like. ;)

Been following the latest DC cock-up on tumblr: a talent search for a new artist to draw a page of Harley Quinn #0. Neat idea, right?

Panel 4/4 reads thusly: Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

Another proud moment in comicsland. If it wasn't so much work I'd consider drawing a sarcastic entry for their talent search, but they're not worth it.
When I told my roommate she snarked that some editor must be looking for material for their fap folder. It would make some sort of sense, because the four panels are totally disconnected and don't give an artist any way to showcase their talent at sequential art, which you'd think is kind of an important ability to look for in a penciller.
Me, I was more wondering whether they want to weed out artists who have a problem with drawing sexist shit.
(I think one of the co-writer's explanation was that it's all 'dark humor' or somesuch. But then he took his facebook entry down so who knows.)

Sunrise over Montmartre by Alpha Flyer (Star Trek: Voyager)
Gen; Harry Kim & Tom Paris; timetravel/backstory; rated teen; 10,163 words
Summary: In which Harry sacrifices some rations to discover just how deep Tom Paris' problems with temporal dynamics really go, and we learn the truth about what happened with Susie Crabtree.

In other news, all the talk about the new Yuletide rules had a pleasant side-effect: I found out that there is more than one book to Gotham Central. I'm reading book two of this noir series right now. I'm finding the characters rather more interesting than Batman himself. The plotlines as well. Also loving the gritty art style and crisp dialogue.

Speaking of comics, I'm really embracing the new Amazon trade-in market. I have by now sent in four or five packages of old books and DVDs and accumulated enough store credit to keep me in comics and DVDs for the next few months. Shopping is a lot more fun if you don't have to pay for it. And as a side effect my book shelves are a lot less cluttered now.

I read Black Widwo: Itsy Bitsy Spider a little while ago and liked it a lot. It's not as brilliant as The Name of the Rose, but then, what is. I thought the book really did right by Natasha's character, and Yelena is intriguing as well. The art was good, too. I mean, okay, both front and back cover are candidates for The Hawkeye Initiative so I was wary, but lo, it seems the artist/editors got it out of their system with the cover art and the inside art is fine. :P

All right, so, I'm looking for more Black Widow.
-I loved Name of the Rose
-liked Itsy Bitsy Spider a lot
-thought Black Widow Strikes was okay but not spectacular
-was indifferent to Widowmaker because the characters fell flat for me.
Based on these, are there any more Natasha-centric comics you can recommend?

What the hell?

So, I'm following the Buffy Season 8 comic series at a leisurely pace and so far I'd been enjoying it quite a lot. Volumes 1-5 were really fun - not as brilliant and tightly written as Angel Season 6 but, solid entertainment with very nice artwork. Vol.6 had questionable moments and seemed to take a strange direction overall but, still mostly fun and I was optimistic it was leading somewhere.

Then I read book 7 and WHAT THE F*CK DID I JUST READ, WTH?
(No spoilers, just general ranting...)

What is going on? I was spoiled for the dramatic Twilight reveal and I heard that it's not done, uh, well, but nothing could've prepared me for the sheer badness that happens within the pages of this volume.

My theory is that Joss or whoever wrote this (Brad Meltzer, I guess) was on crack. And not in the good way, more like "This is why drugs are bad, m'kay?"

This is all kinds of cool: The Hawkeye Initiative redraws absurd superheroine poses with Hawkeye.

I hope some comics artists out there take a look at those, do some quality introspection, and remember them next time they set out to draw a comic panel with a woman in it...

I'm giving away book 1 of Journey Into Mystery: Fear Itself (aka the kid Loki story) by Gillen and Braithwaite, hardcover edition. I couldn't get into it for some reason but about everybody else seems to like it a lot. If you're in Germany shipping is on me (for international delivery I'd have to check the rates first, the book is pretty heavy.)

Avengers Prelude: Black Widow Strikes
avengers-natasha
astridv
I just read another book in the Avengers Prelude comics line which ties in to the movieverse: Black Widow Strikes. I enjoyed this one a lot, much more than the other Prelude books. Really liked both plot and characterization. I feel like the writer *gets her*.

The artwork is still hit-and-miss in places and part 1 doesn't even attempt to get her to look like ScarJo. But once you get reading the character comes to life, because her voice is spot on. The likeness in the last part is actually really good; I was seeing movie Natasha. In general part three has the best art imo.

caveat: When I first opened the book I was, I admit, turned off by the art in part 1. Notably the gratuitous lingeree shots. Now, I don't really have a problem with fanservice. (Let it be stated that I very much appreciated Jeremy Renner's repeatedly shirtless body in The Bourne Legacy.) But I'd like fanservice to be a) tastefully done and b) not so obviously only for the fanboys. Some of the camera angles here were just unnecessary. Well, at least they made the skimpy clothing plot-relevant.

So, I was halfway decided to skip directly to part 3 with the better art, but I started reading from the beginning just in case, and the story won me over quickly.

Natasha, undercover in a nightclub, musing about her cover identity...

What can I say, I'm easy like that. :) No, really, plot and characterization make up for the flaws of this comic. Reccing this one.

Today's rec is one of the actual Marvel comic books because it's just. So gorgeous.
Black Widow: The Name of the Rose, written by Majorie Liu, art by Daniel Acuña

First of all, the artwork is stunning. Stun-ning! Every other page I stopped to just stare. Everything is flawless: anatomy, faces, backgrounds, action scenes, coloring... the lineart is deft and bold and the coloring harmonizes with it completely. I think it really shows that it was all done by just one artist. (Mind that the teaser was drawn by a different artist; Acuña's part starts about 10 pages in.)

Here, just take a look at some of these:
This: www.herebegeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prv5439_pg2.jpg, and this, and one more. And this one.

And the story doesn't disappoint either: Natasha gets framed in a particularly nasty way, and finds herself cut off from her allies while she tries to clear her name. There's a bit of her relationship with the Winter Soldier which (as a card-carrying Nat/Clint shipper) I don't much care for, but it's only in the background and rather nicely done, in a way that showcases her character. Like everything in this comic, really. She's such a well-rounded individual... tough, capable, lethal, ruthless if necessary and still, so utterly human.

I mean, I'm very much in love with the movie version of Black Widow and part of why I love her is that she's just a regular human; but her comics counterpart here is so compelling that I had no problem connecting with this version of her, with the genetic modifications and the backstory dating back to WWII.

I wish I remember where I read the rec for this because I'd like to read more where this came from.

Looking at the art of Ivan Bilibin I feeling inspired. I was experimenting with a more decorative style of illustration in art school and I felt it was really up my alley, just it never fits with the projects I work on so I lost sight of it over the years.

But I really want to try to experiment with my style more. I don't want my art to grow stale.
I scanned a few pages from the days of yore... Read more...Collapse )

What did I just read
avengers-natasha
astridv
I just finished volume five of the Angel: After the Fall comics (and by finished I mean 'threw into a corner before getting to the end'). What the hell went wrong there?! The series has been SO GOOD until now, and book five has that storyline I heard about, with Kate, Angel and Connor working together helping the helpless... HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU MESS THAT UP? Argh. The plot is all over the place, I had problems following and hey, I didn't care. They went with a different writer&artist team for that one and boy, what a difference that makes. All the characters are completely unrecognizable, both in characterization and in appearance. And what's with the Gwen bashing? Maybe there was a plot reason for that but I suppose I'll never find out since I won't bother reading the final chapter. The book doesn't seem to forward the main arc much anyway, so I can see why one of the Amazon reviews suggested to simply skip it. I'll have to agree.

I hear volume 6 is much better again, hope that's right. This makes me appreciate Brian Lynch and Franco Urru all the more, and Joss of course. The first four volumes are a solid rec from me, anyway - totally exceeded my expectations.

this and that

I downloaded Portal 2 because it was on special offer (~10 Euro! 66% off!)... how could I resist, and now it's crammed into every available space of my C: drive. Eek. I moved all my images to a different partition and emptied the recycling bin for good measure but I think it'll be worth it. I looks gooood!

finished big book project a few minutes ago. Turned out really well, I'm happy with it. It's a bit of a fringe topic, not one of the big ones, but I hope it'll sell well anyway. Now I only have to draw a few text backgrounds, make scans, and mail the whole package. Good feeling. It's the first thing I've finished since August, hard to believe. Boy, I needed that feeling of accomplishment.

I recently learned that the Angel: Season 6 comics feature a storyline in which Kate Lockley joins in the re-opening of Angel Investigations, along with Angel and Connor and a couple other characters. I did now know that! I mean. If I could've made a wish for S6, that would've been it, pretty much. (Also, Cordy would be back but I won't get greedy for now).

So, curiosity piqued, I started reading the first book of After The Fall, which I had lying around for a year and... I'm loving it so far. The dialog is totally Joss. The setup is interesting. The art is actually good. Well, honestly I dislike the coloring, I think the art would be much better with a great colorist, but the linart, I like it. It's dynamic, not as stiff as you often see in media tie-ins, and the characters are for the most part very recognizable. (And having done those kind of comics myself, that is hard to get right.) So, I'll keep reading. Curious where it takes me.

Actually I'd already read the chapter where Kate runs into Connor and I didn't comment favorably about it at the time because it seemed little more than setup, but I read it again and knowing that it is just setup and there's more to come... mmmhh. Liking it a whole lot more!

ps. don't diss my girl Kate in the comments, 'kay? She's one of my faves and I'm touchy when it comes to that sort of thing. (Connor too.)
