(meta)fanart: Women Who Kick Butt
So, inspired by the Flowchart of Fail I decided to expand on my previous "Fuck You She's Awesome" post. This is off the top of my head so I bet I forgot a number of characters I really want to include [eta: have since edited in a bunch more]... anyway, these chicks kick ass in various ways and I love them.

That is all.

Zoe Washburn (Firefly), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), River Tam (Firefly), Natasha Romanoff (Avengers), Madam Christmas (FMA)

Anya Jenkins (BtVS), Julie Winters (The Maxx)

p.s. The rules of the original meme apply: I genuinely like these characters; some of them I adore. You’re free to not adore them or have issues with the way they’re written but I don’t really need to hear about those.

Thank you for doing this. It's wonderful! So many amazing ladies!

I didn't know you were a fan of Deep Space 9!!! I've been watching it a lot lately and I love it so much! It's my favourite Star Trek series!

I was hugely into DS9 when it aired! It's my favorite of the Treks. The politics were so intriguing... the various factions, the building and breaking of alliances. And so many fascinating characters. I still rewatch an ep every now and then. (Actually I have a DS9 tag here... not too many fic recs though, since I read in DS9 way before the move to LJ. [eta: oops, only two posts to that tag, I thought I had more...])

Is that an "against slash"-meme? ^.~ It sounds like some het writer heard "There aren't enough interestig characters so I write about two guys." too often.

Apart from that I agree with a lot of those; but I still rather write about two guys.

but I still rather write about two guys.

I'm baffled where you think I'm implying in my post that you shouldn't. This isn't about slash. This isn't about the guys; in this post I want to talk about the awesome women that are out there.

This is awesome! Well done!

Glad you like. It was fun putting that together.

Not to mention all the awesome women that are literary and don't have any pictures - Charity and Molly Carpenter, for instance, and Sybil Vimes (and pretty much any woman from the Disc, for that matter).

Yeah, I stuck mainly with characters from tv for the shiny. Plus, I'm reading a lot of fanfic nowadays so most of the characters I'm reading about are on tv. Huh. It's been so long since I read origfic on a regular basis, I'd really have to think about it for a while.

very good list of absolutely great females. yay for going all the way back to MASH and all the Star Trek women. I'd have added in some more of the ladies from police shows too because well I'm interested in them but this is great. Ooo and Marion from the original Indiana Jones and Princess Leia (but they could be in there and I'm half blind and haven't had my coffee yet)

For me I don't have to go back too far for MASH - German tv showed it in the 90s so we were kinda late to the party. :) (Great party!)

There's a whole bunch of characters I thought of belatedly. I forgot Willow and Tara! Then again, I already have so many Buffy women... really made me realize what a wealth of woman characters that show had. (But I went back in and added Fray and Illyria... I'm a huge fan of both, how could I forget them!)

ah I see. MASH was great party

Buffy and Angel had an amazing cast of strong women. I did love Fray and I have to admit it, I didn't like Fred. I didn't even think Amy could act that well until I saw Illyria who I loved.

I think that's why I'm enjoying Soul Eater so much. While it's slightly skewed more to the male side there are at least a half dozen strong females in it.

I really love this chart. I'd personally add Fiona, from Burn Notice, and Mary, from In Plain Sight.

Amanda King - I adored her. :D And Daphne...and Pippi....

This is such a great list. I love that you made it.

I didn't even plan on doing it at this time, I just thought I'd start by googling a few pics, next thing I know the entire thing is done. (Though I keep adding icons.)

I don't blame you. :D I could understand it being a work in progress.

And the most awesome thing? This is just the (very lovely) tip of the iceberg! There are so many amazing female characters out there in all sort of genres and story-telling formats (books, musicals, epic-poems, and on and on and on) that this idea that there's this horrible dearth is just mind boggling.

I do see how certain genres (action/adventure I think is a big one) have had issues with creating female protagonists, or even fleshed-out female supporting characters. But that flow-chart was... well, let's just say the blog title, "Overthinking It" was rather apt. Creating a solid female character is NOT THAT HARD. If you have to run your character through that many questions to make sure she's good to go, you're doing it wrong.

And their examples? Seriously, my thought is I hope I create a female character cool enough to join a list including Ellen Ripley and Blanche Devereaux.

tl;dr Love your post! :D

And the most awesome thing? This is just the (very lovely) tip of the iceberg!

I know, right? These are just shows I myself like(d), and these are not even all the characters from those shows that I liked, only my favorites. And I'm still adding pics... it's tricky to find good screencaps for older shows. I'm actually thinking of getting my hands on an ep of Picket Fences so I can get a good cap of Marlee Matlin's character. (Plus thinking about that show got me in a rewatching mood.)

that this idea that there's this horrible dearth is just mind boggling.

I really can't take that seriously any more. It's not even "what kind of show are they watching" because in many cases it turns out it's the same shows we're watching. Except they're watching them through goggles with a special polarization filter that apparently amplifies all the awesome in guy characters while blurring out the not-so-awesome... and vice versa with female characters. And as a result, they're missing out on so many great characters. I just... I don't get it.

You forgot my favorite! See icon!

But this is lovely!

This brought such a huge smile to my face you have no idea. The ladies I know here - I love them SO MUCH! ♥

wonderful, simply wonderful. and all these ladies, is freaking amazing!

Happy you like it! I was getting so fed up with that argument, and remined myself that a picture says more than 1000 words. It's an excellent time saver. :)

absolutely and I was so excited on seeing Belle. I think she's the best disney princess.

You know how much I love this idea! I started doing my own, but I don't have your staying power! Or your brilliant artistic mind! But kickass female characters are what helped define me, I know, when I was young. Between Emma Peel and Wonder Woman and, hell, even Daisy Duke, I completely expected to grow up kicking ass and taking names! :P I LOVE this!

I would love to see your version. Actually it'd be cool if this became a meme. Copracat has done one too, I think.

I started with much fewer pics and then just added on, it's less daunting that way. :)

I never saw the British Avengers! (That's where Emma Peel is from, right?) Shame, because it sounds like something I would've enjoyed. Same goes for the Impossible Mission series. My parents were restricting our tv watching so I missed some essential pop culture. :P
