(no subject)

I'm having a hard time coming up with a specific idea for a Leverage fanart because what I really want to do is something set during a con, preferably with some action going on, and these guys are so specialized it's tricky to come up with something that has all of them in the same frame at the same time. I'm wondering if I have to go with the split-screen approach instead. I mean, I have like half a dozen ideas for Eliot just off the top of my head. That one's easy. But I want team!

(If you're having any ideas for a teamy action scene, I'm all ears!)
But first I'm drawing Nate with a hat. Because I just noticed he's hat-less in all my sketches!

womenlovefest is posting right now. I briefly thought about snagging Jennifer, Sam, or Teyla for a week of recs, art and meta but I don't have any new material (and, well, loving the female characters in that fandom is just too damn frustrating.)

But. If you want to read good fic with any of the above women, I can recommend some really good stuff in my tags: Jennifer fic recs, Teyla fic recs, Sam fic recs. And I have a general tag I named ladies in fiction for lack of a better description, which covers a variety of fandoms and characters.

more recs: Calvin & Hobbes, Chuck, SGA

another Yuletide rec:
This kid I once knew (Calvin & Hobbes)
(temporary link in case the servers are robust)
gen; Susie Derkins; post-canon; 1786 words
Summary: Daniel sends their whole improv group an e-mail saying "check this out its fun1!1" and a link to a web comic called The Adventures of Spaceman Spiff.

I read quite a few good C&H stories in which the kids grew up. This one from Susie's POV is one of my favorites.

and squeezing in some non-yuletide recs:
Chuck vs Five Men, One with a Knife by sharpasamarble (Chuck)
gen (with Chuck/Sarah UST, emphasis on 'U'); set in S1; adventure/drama; 70,687 words
Summary: On New Year's Day, Chuck contemplates his resolutions. But a group blunder on a simple mission has complex consequences for Team Chuck, leading each member down a road he didn't expect to travel.

It's rare to find a casefile-style fic with such a satisfying plot. The characterization is sharp and the relationship dynamics portrayed in an interesting way. The author captures the season one vibe well, and adds her own touch.

Love is written in Poetry, Marriage in Prose by Santa (SGA)
R; McKay/Keller/ pre-McKay/Keller/Sheppard; 4191 words
Summary: Rodney and Jennifer fantasize about opening up their relationship.

Looks like McKay/Keller/Sheppard has come to be my OT3, thanks to fic like this one. A well-written, fun exploration of the trio's relationship... during the course of which some popular fandom tropes get turned on their head (always a big plus).

The Hunters by To Be Revealed
gen (with just a hint of Jennifer/Rodney UST); PG-13; Jennifer, Teyla, Rodney, OCs; action-adventure; set early S5; ~26,500 words
Summary: On a diplomatic mission, Rodney, Jennifer and Teyla are overnight guests in a cliffside fortress. When darkness falls, an attack leaves Rodney a severely injured prisoner, and Jennifer and Teyla must get him back -- even if it means braving the lethal catacombs beneath the fortress with nothing but a couple of P90s plus wits, skill and luck.

I'd been feeling a little disconnected from SGA lately but this story restored my squee instantly. I love the author's take on the characters. The fic's got all my favorite things: Teyla and Jennifer kick ass (while saving Rodney's) in a gripping underground adventure setting with action, compelling OCs, and a creepy, scary enemy. (If anyone remembers that old C64 computer game "Impossible mission"... there's a scene in the fic that gave me flashbacks to a particularly nerve-wrecking part in that game. /digresses)

fic&vid recs, and a quicky fma fanart

sga_genficathon has started posting! And kicked off with an excellent Keller fic: Practicing Medicine by kristen999
gen; PG; Set Early S5; 6,000 words
Summary: Jennifer learns that accepting and upholding an oath, requires living it.
I like this story both for its thoughtful portrayal of Jennifer Keller and for the slice-of-life look at the work of Atlantis' medical department.

fma fic rec:
Tradition by raja815
gen; PG-13; humor; 1000 words
Team Mustang celebrate the Winter solstice the traditional way...
'Prominent among decorations include the traditional Solstice Candle, an ornately painted beeswax candle that is lit as the sun sets, and only extinguished when the next morning grows bright enough to see.'

The entire room filled with noxious purple smoke. Mustang, standing closest after lighting it, extinguished the flame with a douse from his glass of wine.
“That,” he gasped when he had breath enough, “was not a solstice candle.”
“I think it might’ve been a signal flare,” Fuery said, timidly.
“Oh, honestly…”
“Man, why are you guys dumping all over my solstice party?” Havoc grumbled. “I’m doing the best I can here…”

fma amv rec:
Nightlights - Royai
I like the mood of this vid.

I'm working on four different projects right now and I want to finish them all before I leave for Comic Con so when I realized last week that I had only eight weeks, I started flailing a bit. But I got a lot done this week, so I'm less with the flailing now. Just, I have a whole folder of stuff I want to link. Where to start... (and, argh, when to do my taxes which are due at the end of the month? *flails*)
Uh, also, I made FMA fanart (it just happened as I was sketching unicorns. I don't even know.) It's a little scene that stuck in my head when reading genarti's Firefight.

I may have gone a little overboard with the FX *scratches head*. I gotta pay more attention next time Roy does that thing of his.

meta & fanart rec (FMA), fic rec (SGA)

FMA meta rec: peri_peteia wrote a really great post on Roy & Riza, on subtext and canon. (link)

FMA fanart rec:
TheOnlyWayIsDeath on DA made an Envy Motivational Poster that alternately cracks me up and makes me go Aww (and then slap myself for going Aww because, seriously, it's Envy!)
Spoilers for chapter 80 and up.

Driven by the desire to subsidize both Amazon and FedEx, I preordered Shounen Gangan. The shipping fee is outrageous but I just don't want to read the final chapter on a screen. (final chapter, waaah) I really dislike reading fiction on the computer. And it's a one time thing, so I figure I indulge. I just hope shipping really takes only a few days... once the chapter is out I'm not going online until I've read it.

a SGA fic I very much enjoyed:
Germination by [personal profile] thingswithwings
Jennifer/Rodney; kink: tentacles!; post-ep for 502 The Seed; words: 5600

It's interesting: the other day someone, I think friendshipper, said that her major story kink is to be surprised (or something like that) and that felt about right. It's why I prefer story warnings that are hidden behind spoiler tags.

I've noticed that after almost three years of reading in this fandom my plot kinks have largely been satisfied - I still enjoy reading them, but right now the kind of story that really hits the spot is one that goes somewhere unexpected, no matter how... by going wildly AU, or developing a minor character or pairing, or turning a common cliche inside out.*

And that's what this fic does, too: it takes some tropes and themes and does something different with them. It's sweet and funny, and her Jennifer voice is spot on. And, well, I can never get enough of well-written Jennifer/Rodney. :)

*That's also why propinquitine's fic Never Quite What You Expect was one of my favorite stories of the entire last year even though it's a pairing I generally feel I overdosed on.

Look, Ma, no meta! (or, SGA fic rec)

I just read a wonderfully evocative Jennifer Keller fic that takes place during her childhood years. I'm going to write a rec for stargateficrec later, but I have to link it here right away:

Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade (even if you skipped it) by tartanshell
gen; pre-series; 1775 words
The summer before seventh grade, Jennifer has a lot to learn.
There's something very compelling about the way this fic is written. The characterization of young Jennifer is fascinating and really a great addition to canon.

In other news, my work project, the one with the April 18 deadline... yesterday I got some serious work done on it, yay! I worked until 3 am last night and it felt good! Still no chance in hell to make that deadline, but it's not my fault and there is two week's leeway so it's not really a big deal. And I think I can have it done in a week now. Fortunately the one technique I developed is a great timesaver.

fic rec (SGA) - The Truth Will Get You Laid

I usually ship Jennifer only with Rodney or sometimes Teyla but after reading this I'm totally ready to board the HMS Cadman/Keller. This story is cute and funny. It's got Jennifer in competent! doctor mode, which I can really never get enough of. And we get to see what's going on in Laura's head (aided by yet another unfortunate incident with Ancient tech).

The Truth Will Get You Laid by thrace
Cadman/Keller; PG; 3,829 words
Summary: Laura Cadman ends up in the infirmary. A lot.

"Ah, scars are sexy," says Cadman, closing her eyes again. "Do your worst."
"Don't you trust my work?"
"Everyone in this city trusts your work." Jennifer's glad that Cadman can't see her ducking her head in embarrassed gratification. "I'm just saying, if I do happen to end up with a scar, I can make up as many stories as I want about how I got it in the name of national security."
"I won't leave a scar," says Jennifer firmly. "I like your face the way it is."

linkage: How it should have ended: new endings for famous movies. Cool stuff. Really well done.

I need better time management. Ever since sholio introduced me to Fullmetal Alchemist I've been short on time for reading fic and meta, because I'm finding myself actually reading and watching tv in Japanese for the fun of it and it is AWESOME because I'm making progress with the language for the first time in years. fic recs (SGA, Torchwood)

Squee! siriaeve wrote me a story with Jennifer, Sam and Rodney: no universal world
mostly gen (with background Jennifer/Rodney); warning: not a light and fluffy story; 8100 words
Between the average success rate of the gate teams, and the skill the scientists had for finding new and interesting ways to blow up large chunks of the city, Jennifer spent most of her time cooped up inside the infirmary.
This is a tense and compelling scenario. I crave stories like this, that throw these three characters together and explore what makes them tick. And I love how Jennifer's and Rodney's relationship is portrayed in the negative spaces, for lack of a better word.

and on a lighter note, also by siriaeve:
Greater Love Hath No Man for his Friends
gen; John Sheppard; ~1400 words
His eyes widened with horror when he got there, though. It wasn't just a section—it was a whole aisle, both sides of it lined with packages in various shades of purple and green and blue and pink. He looked down at the list, but Teyla's neat handwriting didn't offer him any guidance beyond sanitary pads and tampons, several packets. What good was that to him, when there were all these different options? There were different colours and sizes and some of them apparently had wings; John didn't want to know, because he had a sense nothing good could come of asking why sanitary pads needed to be aerodynamic.
20/20 by mad_maudlin (Torchwood CoE)
gen; G; 250 words
Summary: Never again

Signups for the fourth Rodney/Teyla thing-a-thon close on the 14th. Come join, the more the merrier! (This year it's not just ship but friendshippy gen too, for those so inclined!)

ficlet recs (SGA, AtS)

Hero Gets the Girl by bironic (SGA)
Rodney/Buffy fantasy, Rodney/Jennifer; PG-13; 425 words
Summary: What? It was no secret he had a type. (Flashficlet for two prompts at Battle IX: Buffy/Rodney, sarcasm; Jennifer/Rodney, hero.)

I really liked this. Cute, in-character, neat use of the prompts.

Bathing in Jordan by [personal profile] alixtii (AtS)
Cordelia/Kate; post-NFA; PG-13; 917 words
Summary: Sometimes baptism isn't a one-time deal.
Really good character voices. I only wish this fic was a couple thousand words longer but even so it's an intriguing scenario that made my brain spin and imagine the stories to come. (it also appears to be part of a larger series, which I haven't checked out yet.)

My favorite feature of the AO3 is the tagging system, hands down, because now it's possible to find the rarer stuff with just a mouseclick. I was always begriping the lack of fic about Kate Lockley, arguably one of the most interesting characters on the show (ymmv but please not in my LJ), but now... well, there's still not a lot but at least it will be much easier to find. I'm really hoping a lot of people will make use of the archive and upload their older work so the AO3 can unfold its full... awesomeness potential. :o)
